August 21, 2018. Chicago Math and Science Academy is Where Excellence Thrives. Chicago Math and Science Academy (CMSA) was established as a tuition-free college preparatory school in Chicago in 2004. CMSA’s first principal was Salim Ucan and the school’s first location was at 1705 W Lunt Ave. CMSA began offering high quality education to 6th through 8th graders and then added one grade level every year. CMSA became a 6th-12th grade school in 2008 with 600 students.
In 2009, CMSA moved to its current location, 7212 N Clark Street, which used to be the location of a mall in the Rogers Park neighborhood.
Our goal is to maintain excellent parent and student satisfaction and have a high staff retention rate while providing an intense, college- focused curriculum to our students. Our students respond to the culture of achievement and high expectations:

CMSA is one of Chicago’s most successful public charters schools in Illinois. In 2008, CMSA was selected as the top non-selective high school in Chicago and in 2009, CMSA was named as one the promising schools in Illinois.
Beginning in 2013, CMSA has earned a ranking of either Level 1 or Level 1+ (2014, 2015) by Chicago Public Schools (CPS) based on their School Quality Rating Policy (SQRP) report. The report establishes the indicators of school performance and growth and the benchmarks against which a school’s success is evaluated on an annual basis. This report is based on school performance metrics such as PSAE /ACT scores, student growth in math and reading, drop-out rate, and attendance rate.
- In 2015, 2016 and 2017 CMSA earned a Level 1+ Excellent School Rating by Chicago Public Schools This rating places CMSA amongst the highest performing public schools, both charter and district, in Chicago. CMSA’s School Quality Report by CPS can be found at: www.cps.edu.
In addition, CMSA been honored by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top high schools in the nation for the past three years. In 2015 we received a Bronze ranking and in 2016 we received a Silver ranking. Currently U.S. News & World Report ranks CMSA as the #1 public charter school in the state of Illinois.
Chicago Magazine’s September 2016 issue rated schools in the area and listed CMSA as one of the top 2 charter schools in the city.
